Overview

Job Summary

The Skills Trainer II works in a 1:1 setting, assisting individuals with developmental disabilities in participating in normative home-based activities. The goal of the skills trainer is to work with the individual to increase their daily living and independence skills. Activities may include assisting the individual with medical needs throughout the day, supporting with visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe environment within the home.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Implements program activities that will foster individual’s growth, address goals and apply developed skills both in the home.
  2. Locates or provides the district with information to locate adaptive materials.
  3. Teach district personnel skills needed to instruct or assist visually impaired students.
  4. Provide direct services for pre-Braille readiness, Braille reading and writing, orientation and mobility instruction, and adaptive equipment instruction.
  5. Provide other vision services as deemed appropriate by the student's ISP.
  6. Provides support to individual in daily, personal, and social contexts.
  7. Develop positive relationships with families and provide support implementing the goals for individual.
  8. Collaborative and supportive to programming, scheduling, and activities throughout the day.
  9. Positive personality with patience and understanding.
  10. Provide transportation to and from scheduled activities throughout the day.
  11. Attend trainings, supervisions and staff meetings as assigned.
  12. Ensure that individuals we support are treated with dignity and respect in accordance with Advocates’ Human Rights Policy
  13. Perform all duties in accordance with the agency’s policies and procedures.
  14. Adhere to all principles related to the Advocates Way.

Qualifications

Qualification/Education/Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as education or psychology and at least two years of relevant experience in working on skills development with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred but not required.
  2. Experience working with individuals who are medically impaired preferred but not required.
  3. Experience developing, writing, implementing, and evaluating individual behavioral programs.
  4. Must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and ability to use good judgment.
  6. Must have basic working computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  7. Sensitivity to the needs of the population.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  9. High energy level, superior interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team atmosphere.
  10. Must hold a valid drivers’ license.  Must have access to an operational and insured vehicle and be willing to use it to transport consumers.
