As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Marketing and Communications leads strategic marketing and internal and external communications initiatives to promote Advocates’ mission, impact, and growth.

  • Develop and implement agency-wide and program-specific marketing plans and communications strategies, encompassing social media and digital marketing, print marketing, email campaigns, traditional advertising, direct mail, PR and other communication vehicles.
  • Lead the development of content across all communications channels (newsletter, websites, intranet, social media, traditional media, etc.).
  • Generate media interest and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.
  • Supervise a small team, promoting a collaborative, positive, and productive team culture.
  • Oversee copywriting, design, layout, and production of all traditional and digital marketing collateral.
  • Engage and manage outside consultants and vendors as needed, including graphic designers, web developers, public relations consultants, and others.
  • Ensure all external agency communications articulate proper content and image of organization across all mediums and maintain consistent messaging, tone of voice, and visual identity.
  • Monitor, measure, and analyze the effectiveness of marketing initiatives.
  • Work closely with VP of Philanthropy on supporting fundraising initiates.
  • Work closely with Human Resources Department to create communication training for managers.
  • Draft key communications for the President and CEO.
  • Motivate and lead a high performance team; provide supervision, mentoring and professional development opportunities.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.  Ten years of experience in developing strategic communications and marketing plans, preferably in a nonprofit, social services or healthcare setting.  Five years of experience in supervising a staff of two or more.
  • Demonstrate creative and critical thinking skills and a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong business analytics, relationship management, strategy development, project management, problem solving and change management skills.
  • Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, team player, dynamic, creative with the ability to work on own initiative. 
  • Excellent communicator with ability to influence and persuade across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly present recommendations, ideas and to effectively summarize complex issues.
  • Strong computer and report writing skills.
  • High energy level, superior interpersonal and collaboration skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a team atmosphere as well as independently
  • Must hold a valid driver's license, have access to an operational and insured vehicle and be willing to use it to travel between sites when necessary.
  • Strongly prefer a candidate that will have a demonstrated understanding of and competence in serving culturally diverse populations.
