  • Overview

    The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) is responsible for providing assistance to residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), household management and community-based shopping or appointments.  The PCA is a critical member of the clinical team and works closely with family members and other clinicians to support the resident with progress toward more independent living and Individual Service Plan goals.  This role is located in the Bolton, MA area.

    Minimum Education Required

    High School Diploma/GED


    • Assists residents with all Activities of Daily Living, including showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, feeding and taking medications in the community.


    • High school diploma (or equivalent) and current certification in CPR / Basic Life Support are required.  One year's experience in providing direct care preferably with people who have cognitive disabilities, may be considered in lieu of education requirements.  Prefer certification as a Nurse's Aid, Home Health Aid and/or Homemaker.
    • Ability to organize, prioritize, plan, and complete tasks independently.
    • Ability to demonstrate patience, clear verbal communication, abstract reasoning, good judgment, problem solving skills, safety awareness, reading, writing, and auditory comprehension even when under duress.
    • Ability to understand, speak, read and write fluent English.
    • Ability to perform or to learn to perform health maintenance and behavior management tasks to meet residents' needs.  Tasks could include assisting residents to take medications, checking vital signs and blood glucose levels, administering bowel programs, reinforcing positive behavior, monitoring resident status, recording data, and similar types of activities.
    • Ability to assess emergency situations, to collaborate with team members and to determine when to enlist nursing or outside assistance.
    • Ability to remain calm and patient in emergencies or when residents have behavioral issues.
    • Ability to communicate and cooperate with other workers, residents, their families, outside agencies, and the general public.
    • Ability to handle frustration when dealing with others, including people who may behave or speak in an aggressive or threatening manner.
    • Ability to maintain a caring and responsive attitude, conducting all activities respecting resident, family, and employee rights and expectations.
    • Ability to collaborate with other team members and to facilitate coordinated efforts.
    • Ability to accept and utilize constructive criticism and give suggestions in a professional manner.
    • Ability to perform basic computer functions, operate office and household equipment (e.g. phones, fax, copier, microwaves, stoves, ovens, blenders, laundry machines, vacuums,  etc.), utilize medical and adaptive devices (e.g. wheelchairs, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, etc.) and other equipment, (vans, vehicles, television, DVD/VCR, , etc.)
    • Must have a valid driver's license and access to an operational and insured vehicle in addition to willingness to use it to transport residents.
