The Jail Diversion Program Co-Response Clinician is embedded within a police agency and co-responds with law enforcement to 911 calls and other calls for service involving individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. The clinician provides in-the-moment behavioral health assessment, crisis intervention, and linkage to appropriate community-based services, either in the community or at the police station.

This role requires flexibility, independence, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to maintain professional composure and sound decision making in high-stress law enforcement environments. The clinician must demonstrate professionalism, sound boundaries, strong communication skills, and the ability to function effectively within a fast-paced and evolving work environment.

Clinical & Crisis Response Responsibilities

• Actively participate in the ride-along function of the Co-Response model.
• Accompany first-responding officers to call-out situations.
• Provide field-based crisis assessment, de-escalation, and safety planning in collaboration with law enforcement partners.
• Facilitate service referrals and conduct non-traditional follow-up outreach to support successful linkage and stabilization.
• Provide resource education and information to individuals and families at the time of crisis response.
• Maintain necessary documentation, data entry, and records in accordance with program requirements.
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of managed care and health insurance systems and provide relevant guidance to team members as appropriate.
• Remain alert and prepared to respond throughout the scheduled shift.

Police & Community Partnership Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary behavioral health liaison to law enforcement on assigned shift, maintaining clear, collaborative, and professional communication.
• Maintain and strengthen partnerships with Police Departments and community agencies through professional conduct, reliability, documented case consultation, and collaborative problem-solving.
• Represent the program in a prepared and professional manner at community events, task forces, public speaking engagements, external trainings, and other professional forums.
• Prepare for and facilitate monthly Operations meetings with Police Department partners and community systems meetings as required.
• Develop, coordinate, and facilitate police-related trainings as requested by Police Department partners to support crisis response education, behavioral health awareness, and collaborative response practices.
• Participate in cross-training initiatives with law enforcement and Mobile Crisis Intervention (MCI) staff.

• Demonstrate openness to feedback, engage actively in supervision, and integrate supervisory guidance into practice.
• Understand and operate within the defined scope of the Co-Response role, including flexibility in scheduling, training participation, and evolving program needs.
• Attend and actively participate in supervision, team meetings, and required trainings.
• Following successful completion of the 90-day introductory period and demonstration of role competency and professionalism, support onboarding, mentoring, and training of new clinicians as assigned.

• Master’s degree in social work, Counseling Education, Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field.
• At least two years of crisis experience with target population (inpatient, outpatient, residential acceptable).
• Strongly prefer that a candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of and competence in serving culturally diverse populations.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to function effectively in a team-based and fast-paced environment.

• Must possess excellent assessment and interviewing skills.
• Must adhere to professional ethics.
• Ability to develop and maintain satisfactory working relationships with employees and providers.
• Must have working knowledge of current version of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
